basic unit conversions in civil engineering

What is the unit in civil engineering?

Units are essential and basic in civil engineering, we are all measuring everything in different units. Like length, area, volume, etc… For Example;

length

length is a measuring a straight profile, this is a single-axis {x-axis only} measurement. Using units are; millimetres (mm), meters (m), kilometres (km), feet (ft), inches (in), etc…

area

The area is measuring a shape profile, this is a two-axis {x& y-axis} measurement. using units are;millimeter square (mm2), meter (m2), kilometer  (km2), feet (ft2), inch (in2) and etc…

volume

Volume is measuring a shape profile with height/thickness/depth, this is a three-axis {x, y, and z-axis} measurement, using units are; cubic millimetre (mm3), cubic meter (m3), cubic feet (ft3), cubic inch (in3), etc…

Why units are important in civil engineering

Units are very important in all fields, including civil engineering-related fields also. we are using many different units in the civil engineering field, like meters, feet, etc. if whatever we measure, we can compulsorily use at least one unit, like area, length, distance, etc. the units are used in a construction site, drawings, survey, materials quantity, materials calculations, design, plan, etc.

A single unit can change the total measurements/work, so be careful in units. The basic units are one of the askable questions in maximum interviews

What is unit conversion?

Unit conversion is, converting the unit into different requirements, like millimetre to meter, meter to a kilometre, m3 to mm3, feet to the inch, meter to feet, etc…

Here are some basic unit conversions

  • 10mm = 1cm
  • 100cm = 1m
  • 1000m = 1km
  • 1mile = 1.61km
  • 1km = 1094 yard
  • 1m = 3.281 ft
  • 1ft = 12 inch
  • 1m2 = 10.76 ft2
  • 1m3 = 30.315ft3
  • 1 ground = 2400 sq ft
  • 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft
  • 1 hectare = 2.471 acre
  • 1 sq km = 100 hectare
  • 1 sq km = 247.1 acre
  • 1 cent = 40.5 m2
  • 1 cent = 435.6 sq ft
  • 1 cent = 5.5 ground
  • 1 cent = 100 acre

Note;

  1. These are the basic unit conversions, and more conversions are used day by day. That all depends on which unit you require, the above unit conversions are basic. This is a maximum-used unit conversion.
  2. We can convert any units with the help of basic known units in cross multiply/divide, for example – 1km how many feet? We know that 1km is 100m and 1m is 3.281 feet. so, we find the feet value of 100m and that is equal to 1km, 100X3.281 = 328.1 feet. Here the output – 1km = 328.1 feet
  3. The word “cent” is only used in some countries/regions for measurement. In the U.S., one dollar is divided into 100 cents. So, don’t confuse me with this word.
